The eve of Lyla’s departure.
Kyle stood at the door and gave it a knock.
“Come in.”
Kyle walked right in.
Upon seeing him, Lyla said, “What’s up?”
Kyle was hesitant for a while before pulling out something from behind his back. “This is for you.”
Lyla took a look. “What’s this?”
“Open up and see.”
Lyla opened it up and was taken aback by the item inside.
“It would be very inconvenient not to have a phone there, so...”
“I can’t take it.” Lyla shoved the item back to him. “You have taken care of me while I’m here and now you’re giving me such an expensive item. I can’t possibly take it.” Lyla shook his head.
“But it would be troublesome if you don’t have a phone with you when you go out.” Kyle said.
“It’s okay. I can find my family once I’m there. I can’t accept this.” Lyla pushed the phone back to him.
Kyle put it back on her. “You can throw it away if you don’t want it.”
“Sigh...”
Kyle walked out before Lyla could say anything.
Standing there, she looked at the phone and helplessly sighed.
It was easier to repay monetary dues than favor.
She was indebted of both money and obligation...
......
Lyla made a move back to Alpine City.
At the same time, Hansel set out to her side.
Just like that, they missed each other.
Amanda was bubbling over with excitement the moment they stepped off the car.
“This is the city of the legendary jewel kingdom,” Amanda uttered.
Lyla smiled. “Watch out and don’t get lost.”
“I won’t,” Amanda replied with a grin. “With money and a phone, I’m sure you’ll be able to find me.”
Lyla let out a comforted chuckle. Everything was good as long as she did not go astray.
While she was hailing a cab, Lyla caught a glimpse of a magazine rack in a corner. She was dumbstruck to see the person on the cover.
Walking over, she picked up the paper for a look.
‘Mark Pattinson brings girlfriend home, looks like a union is coming along’
Color washed off Lyla’s complexion bit by bit.
Sensing something amiss, Amanda drew near. “What’s wrong?”
Following Lyla’s line of sight, she saw the person in the newspaper. “Do you know this person?”
Amanda grew worried by Lyla’s silence. “Lyla, what’s the matter?”
Snapping out of her thoughts, Lyla shook her head. “I’m okay.”
“Oh, the car is here. Let’s go.” Just then, Amanda pulled her along and retorted.
With the car stopping, the pair got into the vehicle.
“Where to?” The driver enquired.
Lyla gave it a thought before spewing an address.
Amanda was happily seated, anticipating meeting Lyla’s family.
However, they arrived at the place and went upstairs to a locked door. Lyla made a call for someone to pick the lock.
Amanda found it strange. “Lyla, why don’t you knock on the door and enter the house?”
“No one lives here.”
“Huh? Why? Didn’t you say that your family is waiting for you?”
Without a word, Lyla pursed her lips.
Amanda wanted to share more of her thoughts but chose to close her mouth when she noticed that Lyla was not in the mood to talk.
The locksmith soon arrived and unlocked the door.
Setting foot into the house, Amanda took a look around. It looked as though it had not been inhabited for a while.
She was curious as to why.
“Come, let’s tidy up the place. We’re going to live here for now.”
Without asking further questions, Amanda nodded and began to get down on it.
Her attention was pulled to a photograph placed on the table.
It was a photograph of the family of four.
There was Lyla, two children, and most importantly, that man.
He looked awfully familiar.
With a frown, she was hit by the realization that he was the man on the magazine that Lyla picked up after getting out of the car.
With that in mind, it dawned on her why Lyla was acting this way.
Turning back, she glanced at Lyla, who was busy working. She furrowed her brows with worry. “Lyla...”
Lyla lifted her eyes to meet hers and took a glimpse at the photograph by chance.
She curled her lips. “What’s wrong?”
“Is this the person you were talking about?” Amanda enquired.
Lyla gave a nod.
If memory served her right, it was written in the magazine that he had a new girlfriend who he had even brought home.
What would it make of Lyla’s statement that their relationship was as solid as gold...
“How could he do this?” Amanda furiously remarked. “You’re all well but he has a new woman in his life. As expected, men nowadays can’t be trusted.”
Lyla showed no signs of anger. Gazing at the photo, she came close to pick it up for a look. “I’ve been missing for more than two months. To him, I’m no longer around.”
“Wel-well, it shouldn’t be that quick anyway. It’s only been two months. Even a child would grieve for three years over the loss of their parents.”
