Lyla kept watch over Felix by his bed.
Felix finally regained consciousness in the late of the night. There were no words to describe his feelings when he saw Lyla lying face down in front of him.
In the past, he always imagined waking up to Lyla first thing in the morning. It never occurred to him that his dream would be realized.
Yet, it was in such a way.
Nevertheless, despite the circumstance, he was still happy to open his eyes to see her first.
Lifting his arm, Felix gently reached out to caress her face but he was afraid he might wake her. His hand softly stroked her hair in a rather careful manner.
Sensing this, Lyla stirred a little and opened her eyes.
Catching a glimpse of Felix, she immediately sat up. “You’re awake?”
“Yes.” Felix nodded.
“How are you feeling? Are you experiencing any pain? Let me call someone over.”
“I’m fine,” Felix weakly replied. He wanted to get up but Lyla quickly reassured him. “The doctor said that you shouldn’t be moving around.”
“It’s okay.” Felix sat up.
“Why are you still here?” If he saw the time correctly, it was currently three in the morning.
“How can I just leave when you’re like this?” Lyla told him. Her eyes were red.
“Aren’t you afraid that Mark would be worried?”
Speaking of Mark, Lyla paused for a moment before answering, “He’d understand.”
A hint of bitterness flashed past Felix’s eyes.
“Do you want a drink? Let me pour you some water.” Lyla got up to leave.
Felix held onto her hand. “It’s okay.”
Feeling the chill from Lyla’s hand within his clutches, he frowned. “Your hands are cold.”
“I’m fine.” Lyla withdrew her hand but Felix held on tight.
“I’m really fine.”
Paying no heed, Felix removed his outerwear and gave it to Lyla to put on.
“Felix...”
“Listen to me.”
What more could Lyla say? She took a glance at the clothes on her and then at Felix. “Felix, I’m sorry...”
“No need for that.”
“I know I was wrong to lie to you but I had no choice. The person I would rather not deceive in this world is you.” Even if Felix refused to listen, Lyla wanted to say her piece.
She did not want to become strangers with Felix because of this. Even if they were to part ways, Lyla hoped that they were clear on the matter.
“I know,” Felix faintly replied. “You need not say more. I understand where you’re coming from.”
Lyla stared at Felix without uttering another word but it could be read from her eyes that she trusted Felix would understand.
Felix pressed on a button and it was not long before Shadow entered the room. “Boss.”
“Prepare some hot chocolate.”
Shadow observed them before nodding. “Sure.”
Felix turned to Lyla. “You should take a shower and get a change of clothes.”
“I’m fine.”
“Be good now,” Felix uttered. He may be frail but his tone was irrefutable.
Lyla nodded at last and went to take a shower.
By the time she was done half an hour later, Felix had already gotten out of bed and was sitting on the sofa. He carried himself with poise even though he was wounded. His striking good looks presented a rather sickly beauty.
“Come over here,” Felix summoned Lyla over.
Lyla drew close.
“Have some hot chocolate.”
Lyla turned her attention to the hot chocolate drink. Giving a nod, she downed it in one go.
While drinking, a lump was caught in her throat for some reason.
The past. She remembered the past.
She was working late one time and was running behind time. Hansel and Gretel were really young back then. Lyla was in a hurry to pick them up but simply could not find the time to excuse herself. In the end, she ditched work and rushed back. It never crossed her mind that it would rain during her journey home. With Hansel and Gretel in mind, she ran like mad home only to discover that Felix had them covered.
She was moved at that moment.
Moved beyond words.
It did not stop there. As she caught a cold from being in the rain during her journey back, Felix had to take care of her too.
With that in mind, Lyla was between laughter and tears. It was a complex of emotions.
Were these the supposed changes of circumstances following the passing of time?
Watching as Lyla drank the hot chocolate in tears and laughter, Felix reached out and caressed her head. He spoke with a doting voice, “What’s wrong?”
Lyla shook her head. “Nothing.” She then finished the hot chocolate.
Gazing at Lyla, Felix pursed his lips and said, “Lola still refuses to save Gretel...”
Lyla merely looked back without saying a word.
“But don’t worry, I will think of a way for her to save Gretel.”
Lyla’s tears gushed down.
She knew.
She knew Felix would save Gretel.
“Why are you crying, silly? Did the rain get to your head?” Felix gave her head a good rub.
“Felix...” Lyla whimpered. “Thank you, really, thank you.” She jumped into his embrace.
No words could replace the genuineness of this hug.
Felix cuddled Lyla back. She was by his side and yet felt so far away.
Perhaps this was the only thing he could do for her.
“Lyla?”
“Huh?”
“Can you keep me company today? Just for one night,” Felix looked at her and asked.
Lyla met his eyes and nodded. “... Okay.”
Smiling at Lyla, Felix extended his arm and wiped away her tears.
