”I don’t know. I like Daddy and Felix.” Gretel was plagued by the question.
“We can’t have our cake and eat it too,” Hansel commented.
“I know but I really like them both. Poor Felix, if Mommy and Daddy wound up together,” Gretel replied.
With that in mind, Gretel sat up straight. “No, I want to visit Felix.”
Hansel looked at her in shock. “Now?”
“Yes, now. Hansel, come with me.”
“But...”
“Hey, let’s go.”
…...
“What brings you here?” Felix turned to the children.
Hansel and Gretel each carried a bag of groceries while walking through the door.
“I heard from Mommy that you’re here so Gretel and I came to visit you and have dinner with you too.”
Gazing at them, Felix’s lips curled into a smile.
The pair entered the room and went straight to the kitchen to unpack the grocery bags.
Gretel was a slacker. She came out right after putting the groceries down and climbed onto the sofa to nestle up against Felix. “Felix, why are you here?”
“I came to take a look because I missed you,” Felix answered with a smile.
“How long are you staying for?” Blinking her bright eyes, Gretel asked.
“How long do you want me to stay?”
Gretel rested her head on his shoulder like a considerate little sweetheart. “I want Felix to always be by my side.”
These words undoubtedly left Felix overjoyed. “If that’s the case, I should always be by your side.”
“Really?”
“Of course, it is as real as you want it to be.”
Curling up against him, Gretel nodded.
Hansel was watching from the kitchen. He came out and drew close to them. “Can you two stop taking your sweet time? Can’t anyone help me in the kitchen?”
Gretel and Felix both shook their heads.
Having no alternative, Hansel turned back to the kitchen to prepare the food.
Gretel and Felix chuckled. They sat on the sofa, chatting and laughing.
There was an unspeakable sense of harmony about this scene.
From the kitchen, Hansel observed them while trying to keep his mind off of certain thoughts. Regardless of the outcome, he was just going to take it one step at a time. It was not as though he could say anything now.
Soon, dinner was ready.
Sitting in the middle of the dining table, Felix gazed at the table of food before turning to Hansel with a smile on his lips. “It’s been a while since I had my darling’s food.”
Hansel let out a grin. “You can call me over anytime if you want a taste of my cooking.”
“Well, I won’t be polite about it.”
“Mommy said that we must come over and keep you company for your every need.”
Hearing these words, Felix perked up the corner of his lips. “Okay, let’s eat.”
The trio began to dig in.
While indulging in her meal, Gretel uttered, “Felix, why didn’t you bring Shadow along with you?”
“He needs to take care of some personal business so he stayed behind in Rome.”
Gretel nodded at the reply. “Wouldn’t that put you in a risky situation?”
“Don’t worry. I will be fine as long as your daddy keeps his hands off me.” Felix did not mince words.
Hansel and Gretel exchanged glances following the statement. “No way. You helped save me. Daddy won’t do anything to you.”
“I hope so.”
“Relax, Daddy won’t do anything with me protecting you,” Gretel retorted with a smile. Her tone was very sweet, similar to the time before meeting Mark when she would appease to him.
Felix reached out to ruffle her hair before continuing with his dinner.
Even though the trio sat down and ate in cheer and laughter like before, they were overcome by a feeling that they could not return to the past.
It must be so as they all had a secret that they were unwilling to share.
After dinner, Gretel played with Felix on the sofa. Felix wanted to send them home when it was getting late and they were ready to leave.
“It’s okay, Felix. We can get a cab home,” Gretel said.
Felix turned his attention to them. “Did you forget what happened before?”
It was enough to shut Gretel’s mouth.
“Let’s go. I’ll drive you home.”
The pair did not argue and compliantly got in the car.
Gretel was babbling on about something throughout the journey while Hansel was looking at something on a laptop.
Through the rear-view mirror, Felix took a glance at Hansel and enquired, “What are you looking at?”
Uh.
Taken aback by the question, Hansel quietly wiped off the IP address and clicked on a game before replying, “I’m watching a game.”
“What sort of game?”
“A mobile game.”
Felix nodded and continued the conversation. “I heard that you haven’t been in school lately?”
“Huh, yes.”
“Why aren’t you going to school? You still have to go to school regardless of how smart you are.”
“I know but it’s because Mommy and Daddy...” He paused midway before uttering, “That’s why I took a break.”
Felix nodded without giving further input but his eyes that were looking at Hansel through the rear-view mirror spoke of an obscure incomprehension.
