“Oh my, you’re not telling Mr. Pattinson that you’re pregnant. What are you going to do if something happens?” Amanda cautiously held her arm and said.
“He’s trying to catch the mastermind behind the scenes. I don’t want him distracted. I’ll let him know in a few days.”
“Come, sit.” Amanda helped her to her seat.
Lyla laughed. “I’m not that delicate.”
“I’m shouldered with a heavy responsibility to look after you. I can’t bear the weight of it if even the slightest thing happens to you.” With a flicker in her eyes, Amanda stared at Lyla’s belly. “Moreover, I need to be nice to the little baby in your belly. What if the child turns out to be a genius? I am the guardian!”
Lyla, “...”
“Fancy anything to drink?”
“Water is good.”
Amanda went ahead to pour a glass of water.
Sitting on the sofa, Lyla took in the view of her back. Oh, right. How’s it going between you and Neil?”
Amanda stopped pouring at the mention of him. The color drained from her face. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“You know very well what I’m talking about.” Sizing her up, Lyla replied.
Amanda approached and gave the water to her with a blank look. “I don’t know him.”
“You don’t know him but he knows you,” Holding onto the glass, Lyla retorted.
Amanda averted her gaze in guilt.
Aware that she had no memory of this, Lyla turned to her. “You can’t remember anything?”
Amanda shook her head.
Lyla sighed.
It appeared that this matter was a huge project itself and could not be solved in a jiffy.
The pair chatted for a while. Amanda uttered, “I have tidied up the room. Take a break if you’re tired.”
“I do feel a little sleepy. Let me go lay my head down for a while.”
“I’ll call you when it’s dinner time.”
“Sure.”
With that, Lyla entered the room.
Amanda sat on the sofa, reflecting on Lyla’s words as her facial muscles tensed up.
Although she had no memory, Amanda had a dream that consistently appeared in her sleep. In the dream, a man was facing her but it was too dark to look as the light was directed at her, blinding her eyes. It was impossible to take a good look at the man’s appearance.
Her intuition in the dream told her that the man was outstanding. Outstanding to the point that she was too far behind to catch up to.
Moreover, she had a clear idea of the past between them. Otherwise, she would not be happy yet sad to see the man. These mixed emotions left her suffocated and with the urge to cry in the dream.
Everything was a blur despite her efforts to take a good look at that face. In the end, she would wake up in a struggle.
She wondered what the meaning of this dream was because the dream was constant for a long time. Amanda was curious in the beginning but thought nothing much about it after getting used to it later on.
Then came Neil.
He seemed to know her but he was a stranger in her memory. Nevertheless, undeniably, it was quite a blow to her the moment he appeared before her.
She found him strange yet familiar.
Amanda was conflicted by this weird feeling while at the same time wanting to leap forward. However, it remained as though she was admiring flowers in a fog, unable to see through despite her best efforts. This was the only way she could handle it.
Neil.
She thought about it hard and long but she did not know this man.
This was even though he was so outstanding that she could barely restrain herself, just like the person in her dream...
Agitated, Amanda made up her mind to stop dwelling in it and made dinner.
...
Lyla slept through the whole afternoon and only listlessly got up when Amanda woke her up to eat.
“People say that those bearing children can really sleep and I finally bear witness to that.” Unable to hold back laughter, Amanda remarked.
Lyla fixated on her. “I wasn’t like this before. I felt quite alive when I was pregnant with the twins. Who knew that now... sleep comes so easy?”
Amanda chuckled. “Wow, your romance and career are sure are taking off. I’m so jealous.”
Lyla looked towards her. “You can too.”
“Me?” Amanda gave it a thought. “I don’t have high hopes. It was hard enough for my parents to allow me to come here. My only wish is to do well in my work.”
Lyla did not comment further. Relationships were the type of thing that did not come as planned. It usually showed up out of nowhere, catching people unaware. People loved it and hated it.
Not indulging in the topic further, Amanda nodded with a smile. It was best to just wait and see.
“Let’s eat,” She said.
With Amanda giving a nod, the pair engaged in conversation and dug in.
“Oh, right. Come with me tomorrow to shop.”
“Shop? What are you buying?”
“Clothes.”
“Why the sudden need to buy clothes?” Amanda asked.
Amanda immediately got the hint following a look given by Lyla. “Oh, oh. Isn’t it too early for that?”
“I don’t know but I feel a little fat recently. I need to buy some loose clothes,” Lyla replied.
“You? Fat?” Amanda looked at her up and down. Lyla had a figure anyone could grow envious of, yet she said she was fat.
It was certain to receive eye-rolls in return if word ever got out.
Amanda helplessly sighed. “Lyla, you can say that at home. Don’t ever mention this outside.”
“Why?”
“I’m afraid you will be attacked by the masses.”
Lyla could not help but chortle. “I’m being serious here.”
“All the more you shouldn’t bring it up.”
Lyla resignedly bobbed her head. “Fine then.”
...
“How is it? Did you get any leads?” Standing in front of a window, Mark solemnly spoke.
“No leads. The car plate number is a fake, so the search came up empty.”
Mark’s already long face turned sour. It was fine had it been an accident. His worst fears were if the person switched targets to Lyla.
