Mark walked in just as Kathleen turned on the waterworks.
He immediately caught sight of Kathleen. The woman looked like a wreck from the mishap revolving around the Turners.
“You’re back?” Glancing at Mark, Justin sullenly spoke.
Detecting sound, Kathleen turned to the door and noticed Mark. Jolting up, she pounced at the man.
“Mark...”
Mark stood still for Kathleen to embrace him.
“Mark...” Kathleen cried her heart out and started to weep. Her pale complexion carrying hints of discoloration could really tug at heartstrings.
She lifted her gaze to meet Mark’s once she was done shedding tears. “My father was framed and taken away. Mark, only you can help him now!”
He stared into Kathleen’s yearning and trusting eyes. It would not have come to this if she and Aron had not gone overboard.
“I already know about that!”
“Mark, you must help him. Otherwise, my family is done for!” Kathleen exclaimed amid bawls. Anyone’s heart would break observing the delicate attraction of hers.
However, Mark was the exception to the rule.
“Kathleen, I’m sorry. It’s out of my hands!” Mark enunciated clearly.
“Why?” Kathleen lifted her head and looked at him in disbelief, doubtfully scanning him.
“Your father’s case of embezzlement is not within my capacity. There’s no way I can save him!” Mark slowly uttered. He did not want to give her false hope as he had no intentions of helping out.
Mark would never have thought to take this step had they not pushed too far. They only had themselves to blame for their ego.
Hansel would probably refuse to acknowledge him as a father if he were to make a move and help at a time like this.
“Mark, I know you surely have a way. He was framed!”
Pursing his lips, Mark’s mind flew to Lyla and the kids instead.
Under the impression that he was thinking of her father’s matter, Kathleen jumped in. “My father was really framed. Mark, you have to save him!”
Mark was displeased with Kathleen’s constant repeated emphases.
Justin turned to him. “What do you think of the matter?”
“This has caught the attention of higher ups. We’ll know whether it’s true or not after the investigation!” Mark replied.
He frowned. “Kathleen, you should know whether it’s a set up or not. Do I need to spell it out for you?”
Kathleen was dumbstruck.
Indeed, there were certain things Kathleen could not deny but it never crossed her mind that Mark would be so brusque. She made a wry face.
Seemingly sensing Kathleen’s displeasure, Mark spoke, “Nevertheless, since everything is still under investigation, I will send someone to look after your father!”
“Really? Thank you, Mark...” Kahleen gracefully retorted.
Mark simply curled his lips without a word.
Justin turned his attention to him. “What’s your opinion on the matter?”
“It’s still being investigated. It would depend on how concrete is proof handed over!” In other words, there was no escaping for Aron if it was hard evidence.
Justin nodded. Who would have thought Aron would be implicated? That was an unwise move on his part.
“I must figure out a way to get my father out no matter what! I need to find that person!” Kathleen firmly declared.
Mark and Justin held their silence.
Just then, Kathleen turned towards them and fixed her gaze on Mark. “Mark, our house is sealed off for now...”
Mark could tell where she was going before she could finish. He was about to say something when Eileen spoke before him. “You can stay here in the meantime...”
This was what Kathleen was after. “Really? Can-can I?”
“You and Mark are engaged and now with the thing with your father, I’m sure you don’t have a place to stay. Of course you can,” Eileen said in a soft voice.
Kathleen had the impression that Eileen never said much, nor would she be speaking in such a soft tone. She could tell that Eileen and Mark were not on the best of terms, so she dared not foster too much of a relationship. It never occurred to her that Eileen would offer assistance right there and then.
With that in mind, Kathleen felt she had been prejudiced against Eilleen and was really grateful.
“Thank you!” Kathleen uttered with a smile.
“Don’t mention it!” Eileen grinned. “I’ll get someone to prepare a room for you!”
With that, she got up and instructed the maid to tidy up a room.
Mark did not say a word the whole time but his eyes went back and forth around them.
Based on his understanding of Eileen, she was definitely not this nice. She must have her own agenda to allow Kathleen to live here.
Mark did not put a stop to it because he wanted to see what Eileen was up to.
Turning to glance at Mark, Kathleen appeared delicate. “Mark...”
“If that’s the case, then you should live here for now!” Mark replied.
Kathleen was jumping with joy by his consent. Having known Mark for so long, she never spent the night at Mark’s apartment or the family home. This was the first time.
She could not help to think that Mark was serious about her.
Was it not said that the people that picked you up during your lowest were the ones who gave you their heart? She naturally put Mark into the same category.
She was touched, and for him to stay with her during this time was like a little bit of warmth amid the extreme cold.
